Texas LCSW CEU Requirements (2026–2027)
Texas LCSWs need 30 hours of continuing education every two years, with 6 hours of ethics, 3 hours of cultural diversity or distinct populations, and at least half of those hours from a tightly defined list of approved providers. CE Broker reporting is now mandated. Here is the verified breakdown from 22 TAC §781.501.

The short version
| Requirement | Hours | Cycle |
|---|---|---|
| Total continuing education | 30 | Every 2 years |
| Professional ethics | 6 | Every 2 years |
| Cultural diversity / distinct populations | 3 | Every 2 years |
| Supervisor training (LCSW-S only) | 6 | Every 2 years (additional) |
| Carryover allowed | 10 | Up to 10 hrs to next cycle |
The remaining 21 hours can come from any course content related to clinical social work practice, professional development, or the populations you serve.
CE Broker is now mandated (effective January 1, 2026)
Texas social workers must report all continuing education through CE Broker — the board-mandated reporting platform shared across regulated health professions. This change does not alter what you have to take; it changes where you log it.
Still Licensed sits one layer above CE Broker. It tells you what's left for the cycle, what counts toward each category, and what's coming due — across all your states — so when you open CE Broker at renewal time you already know your status. Think of it as the planning view; CE Broker is the filing cabinet.
Half from listed providers
Effective January 1, 2024, at least 15 of your 30 hours must come from providers enumerated in 22 TAC §781.501 — NASW, CSWE-accredited programs, regulatory boards, the Council on Social Work Education, and other approved national or state organizations. The remaining 15 may come from any provider whose course content meets the rule's relevance test (clinical social work practice or scope of license).
Supervisor add-on (LCSW-S only)
If you hold the supervisor designation (LCSW-S), you must complete 6 additional hours of board-approved supervision training each cycle — on top of the standard 30. The supervisor hours don't count toward your general CE total; they're a separate stack.
Human trafficking awareness
Texas requires an HHSC-approved human trafficking course at initial licensure. There's no recurring clock-hour minimum at renewal, but completing a refresher claims 1 professional development hour toward the 30-hour total.
Carryover
Texas is one of the more flexible states on carryover. You can roll up to 10 unused hours from one biennium into the next — useful if a heavy CE year happened to coincide with a light one. Ethics and cultural diversity hours don't carry over separately; they count against the same 10-hour cap as everything else.
First renewal
Standard 30-hour requirement applies — Texas does not exempt the first renewal cycle.
Documentation
Even with CE Broker in place, retain your certificates of completion for at least 24 months in case the board audits your record. CE Broker stores what you log there; the board can still ask for original documentation from the provider.
Other Texas social work licenses
- LMSW: Same 30-hour biennial requirement, same ethics and cultural minimums.
- LBSW: 30 hours every 2 years with the same category breakdown.
- LCSW-S supervisors: +6 hours of board-approved supervision training each cycle on top of the LCSW total.
