Arizona LMFT CEU Requirements (2026–2027)

The Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners requires LMFTs to complete 30 clock hours every two years, with sub-requirements in ethics and cultural competency plus a state statutes tutorial. BBHE applies the same CE rule across its credentials. Here is the verified breakdown for the LMFT track.

The short version

BBHE runs LMFT, LCSW, and LPC under one continuing-education rule. AAC R4-6-801 opens with “A licensee holding an active license to practice behavioral health in this state shall complete 30 clock hours” and R4-6-802(C) lists the 3 ethics, 3 cultural competency, and 3 AZ Statutes Tutorial sub-requirements. The rule does not impose an MFT-specific systemic or relational CE block, so hours on couples and family work count toward the 30-hour total alongside other behavioral-health content. Your LMFT statute anchor is ARS 32-3311.

About "clock hours"

Arizona is specific about this: the board measures CE in clock hours, not in CEUs or credit hours. One clock hour equals 60 minutes of actual instruction. Most reputable providers already report in clock hours, but double-check certificates that use any other unit.

The Arizona Statutes Tutorial

Every renewal cycle, Arizona licensees must complete a board-approved tutorial on Arizona statutes and regulations. Under AAC R4-6-802(C)(2) the tutorial is worth 3 clock hours and counts toward the 30-hour total. Required for every renewal since 2018-01-01. Confirm the current version with BBHE at each renewal.

Renewal timing

Biennial renewal. The application becomes available 90 days before expiration.

Grace period

Arizona allows a 90-day grace period after expiration with a $100 late fee. After 90 days there are no extensions, and you would need to reapply. Do not rely on the grace period as a planning tool.

Accepted CE formats

CE must be sponsored, approved, or offered by entities listed in AAC R4-6-802(D), and must relate to the scope of practice and maintenance or improvement of professional skill and competency. AAMFT, CAMFT, and other MFT-specific provider bodies qualify as accepted sponsors for the MFT content that anchors most of your 30 hours.

Carryover

Arizona does not document a carryover allowance. Assume excess hours do not roll over.
