Oregon LMFT CEU Requirements (2026–2027)

Oregon LMFTs share a board and a rulebook with Oregon LPCs. The Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists (OBLPCT) requires 40 CE hours every two years, and ORS 676.866 adds 2 hours of suicide risk assessment on the same biennial clock. Here is the verified breakdown.

The short version

RequirementHoursCycle
Total continuing education40Every 2 years
Ethics and Oregon Law/Rules6Every 2 years
Cultural Competency4Every 2 years
Suicide Risk Assessment (ORS 676.866)2Every 2 years

OBLPCT regulates both LPC and LMFT licensees under the same CE rule (OAR 833-080-0011). The numbers below apply identically to both credentials. The remaining 28 hours can come from any board-recognized CE that relates to marriage and family therapy practice.

Ethics and Oregon law/rules: 6 hours

The 6-hour ethics block must include the OBLPCT Code of Ethics and the Oregon statutes and rules that govern LMFT practice. A generic AAMFT ethics course alone does not satisfy this requirement if it does not touch Oregon-specific content.

Cultural competency: 4 hours

OBLPCT requires 4 hours of cultural competency per cycle, distinct from the ethics hours. Content should address work with diverse populations across family systems, including culture, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and disability.

Suicide risk assessment: 2 hours every 2 years

ORS 676.866 lists LMFT as one of the clinical professions subject to mandatory suicide training. The baseline is 2 hours every 2 years, or 3 hours every 3 years. Administration runs through the Oregon Health Authority, separate from the OBLPCT 40-hour CE rule. A qualifying course can often satisfy both requirements, but track the suicide hours independently so you can prove completion if audited.

Renewal timing

Oregon LMFT renewal is biennial and falls on the last day of the licensee's birth month. The first renewal after initial licensure has no CE requirement, and CE hours earned before that first renewal cannot be counted toward later cycles.

Carryover

OBLPCT does not allow carryover. Hours earned beyond the 40-hour total in a cycle do not roll forward. Plan your hours to land inside each biennial window.

Accepted CE formats

  • Conferences, seminars, and workshops (in-person, online, or webcast) from board-recognized credentialing bodies (AAMFT, ACA, APA, NBCC)
  • University graduate-level coursework in marriage and family therapy or a related clinical field
  • Teaching CE (course development and presentation), with board-defined caps
  • Self-approved training when the provider is not on an existing accepted list

Documentation

Keep completion certificates and course records for at least 24 months after each renewal. OBLPCT conducts random audits, and the burden of proof is on the licensee. Still Licensed stores the certificate URL with each CE entry so retrieval during an audit is a single click.

Still Licensed keeps your Oregon ethics and total hours up to date as you log each CE. Multi-state support means one entry can count toward every state you're licensed in.
